What Are Neurodevelopmental Disorders?
Neurodevelopmental disorders are a group of conditions that affect the development of the nervous system. These disorders can affect how a person feels, thinks, and moves. Intellectual disability, anxiety disorder, autism spectrum disorder, mood disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are all examples of neurodevelopmental disorders.
In order to understand how these disorders develop, it is important to first understand how the nervous system develops. The nervous system begins to develop in the womb and continues to grow and mature throughout childhood and adolescence. During this time, different areas of the brain form and begin to work together. Neurodevelopmental disorders can occur when there are problems with this development process.
Some neurodevelopmental disorders are caused by genes or genetic mutations. Others may be caused by problems during pregnancy, such as exposure to certain viruses or chemicals. Neurodevelopmental disorders can also be caused by problems during delivery or after birth, such as a lack of oxygen to the brain.
Types of Neurodevelopmental Disorders
There are many different types of neurodevelopmental disorders. Some of the more common ones include:
- ADHD
- Learning Disorders
- Communication Disorders
- Autism Spectrum Disorder
The severity and type of developmental disorder can vary from person to person. Some people with neurodevelopmental disorders may only have mild problems, while others may have more severe issues that affect their ability to function in day-to-day life. The symptoms you experience depend on the area of the brain that is affected. If an early treatment process is started the symptoms can be managed very well.
There is no one-size-fits-all treatment for neurodevelopmental disorders. Treatment often involves a team of specialists who work together to create an individualized plan. This plan may include behavioral therapy, medication, and/or special education services.
